Softball Game Preview: Oak Glen Golden Bears vs. Petersburg Vikings

The Oak Glen Golden Bears will square off against the Petersburg Vikings at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Oak Glen will be strutting in after a win while Petersburg will be coming in after a defeat.

Oak Glen is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of West Virginia's top teams: St. Marys, who was ranked 16th at the time (Oak Glen was ranked 11th). The Golden Bears were the clear victors by an 8-2 margin over the Blue Devils on Tuesday. The Golden Bears might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 16 games by six runs or more this season.

Mattie Carney spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on six hits and racked up 14 Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 17 consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Addie Smith and Mikalyn Balch did most of the damage at the plate: Smith went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run, while Balch got on base in two of her three plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. Maddie Murray was another key player, earning two runs and two stolen bases.

Meanwhile, Petersburg lost 9-2 to Keyser on May 1st.

Petersburg's loss dropped their record down to 13-9. As for Oak Glen, they are on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 13 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 27-10 record this season.

Oak Glen couldn't quite get it done against Petersburg when the teams last played back in April of 2017 as they fell 4-1. Can the Golden Bears avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
