Basketball Recap: Hialeah Gardens Falls Despite Big Games from Robert Masis and Sean Leon

Hialeah Gardens was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They took a 67-53 bruising from Sports Leadership & Management. While losing is never fun, the Gladiators can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 481st, while Sports Leadership & Management are ranked 240th).

Sean Leon and Robert Masis certainly did their best on Tuesday to avoid the loss. Leon posted 25 points, while Masis dropped a double-double on 12 points and 15 boards. Hialeah Gardens is 2-1 when Masis posts eight or more rebounds, but 3-8 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Alexander Masis, who scored eight points and eight assists.

Even though they lost, Hialeah Gardens smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 24 consecutive games dating back to last season.

Ethan Taylor continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Sports Leadership & Management, dropping a double-double on 25 points and 12 boards. The matchup was Taylor's fourth in a row with at least ten points. Franco Moreira was another key player, putting up nine points along with eight rebounds and three steals.

Hialeah Gardens' defeat dropped their record down to 5-9. As for Sports Leadership & Management, they now have a winning record of 10-9.

Hialeah Gardens will be playing in front of their home fans against Dr. Krop at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. Hialeah Gardens is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 55.4 points per game this season. As for Sports Leadership & Management, they won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Mater Lakes Academy at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
