Erick Valles made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out six batters over four innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with five stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI.
In other batting news, Christian Mauk was a standout: he got on base in all three of his plate appearances with four stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was John Kirkland, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with four stolen bases and two runs.
Cordova always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .806. The last time their OBP was this high was was before the start of last season.
Meanwhile, Sheffield was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their tenth straight defeat. They came up short against Overton, falling 13-5.
Kamauri Whitley made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and got on base in two of his four plate appearances with six stolen bases and two runs.
The win made it two in a row for Cordova and bumps their season record up to 8-4-1. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 17.5 runs over those games. As for Sheffield, their loss dropped their record down to 2-11-1.
Sheffield's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Cordova hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .410. It's a different story for Sheffield, though, as they've only averaged .155. Will they be able to contain Cordova's hitters?
Cordova took their win against Sheffield in their previous meeting back in April of 2023 by a conclusive 24-11 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Wolves since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
