Guilford is 9-1 against Branford since April of 2017 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Grizzlies are taking a road trip to take on the Hornets at 4:15 p.m. Branford took a loss in their last match and will be looking to turn the tables on Guilford, who comes in off a win.
Guilford was handed a ten-run defeat in their previous outing, but that didn't affect their clutch gene on Tuesday. They had just enough and edged out Sacred Heart Academy 6-5. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last five times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Sarah O'Brien was a major factor no matter where she played. She pitched seven innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off ten hits. O'Brien was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one home run. That home run was her first of the season.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Ava Eagleson, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with three stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. Another player making a difference was Kennadie Tansey, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one double.
Meanwhile, Branford duked it out with East Haven in a bug-themed battle on Monday. The Hornets lost 9-2 to the Yellowjackets. Having soared to a lofty 22 runs in the game before, the Hornets couldn't push the score so high this time.
Branford saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Tatum Lipka, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Guilford's record now sits at 3-4. As for Branford, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost four of their last five contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-5 record this season.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Wednesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Guilford has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Branford struggles in that department as they've been averaging 2.7 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Guilford skirted past Branford 5-4 when the teams last played back in May of 2023. Will the Grizzlies repeat their success, or do the Hornets have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
