Baseball Game Preview: Pojoaque Valley Elks/Elkettes vs. Taos Tigers

The Pojoaque Valley Elks/Elkettes are taking a road trip to take on the Taos Tigers at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.

Pojoaque Valley made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Espanola Valley, but they still couldn't quite topple them. The Elks/Elkettes put the hurt on the Sundevils with a sharp 14-5 win on Saturday. The Elks/Elkettes not only won on Saturday, but they posted their biggest win since March 6th.

Meanwhile, Taos got the win against Espanola Valley on Wednesday by a conclusive 14-7.

Jordan Tafoya made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He struck out eight batters over four innings while giving up three earned runs off four hits. Those eight strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-5 with five RBI, two runs, and one double. He has become a key player for Taos: the team is 4-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 3-5 otherwise.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Christian Fresquez, who scored a run while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances. What's more, he posted three RBI, the most he's had since back in March. Miguel Garcia also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

Taos kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. They are 5-1 when they post 11 or more hits.

Taos has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-6 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. As for Pojoaque Valley, their win was their first in the district, bumping their district record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 5-12.

Pojoaque Valley couldn't quite get it done against Taos in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 as they fell 13-8. Can the Elks/Elkettes avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
