Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school football. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2021 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence, in addition to local and state accolades.
Emmett Johnson of
Academy of Holy Angels (Richfield) is the 2021 MaxPreps Minnesota High School Football Player of the Year. The 6-foot, 183-pound running back is a three-star prospect who ran for 2,513 yards and 42 touchdowns for the 9-3 Stars this season. He added 85 tackles and 13 tackles for loss on defense.
Johnson has eight offers, including Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Montana State, North Dakota, Northern Iowa, South Dakota, South Dakota State and Western Kentucky.
Trey Feeney of
Moorhead was the 2020 MaxPreps Minnesota High School Football Player of the Year.
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound senior quarterback threw for 1,973 yards and a
state-best 36 touchdowns in leading the Spuds to a 7-0 recording during
the pandemic-shortened season.
Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team, which will be released in early January.
