The Weedsport Wolverines will challenge the Port Byron Panthers at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Weedsport is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9 runs per game this season.
Port Byron will be up against a hot Weedsport team: the squad just extended their winning streak to three. The Wolverines blew past Pulaski 22-3 on Wednesday. The game was the first time the Wolverines have beaten the Blue Devils on their field since April 26, 2023.

Alex Seward and Brandon Thomas were major factors while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Seward tossed three innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Meanwhile, Thomas struck out six batters over four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits. Seward is becoming a predictor of Weedsport's success: when he allows at most one earned run the team is 3-1 (and 1-2 when he doesn't). At bat, Seward got on base in four of his six plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI, while Thomas went 2-for-5 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. Seward has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times he's played.
In other batting news, Weedsport got a massive performance out of Nico Giacolone, who went 2-for-5 with seven RBI, three runs, and one triple. Giacolone is also on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Patrick Whitman, who went 4-for-6 with five runs, two stolen bases, and three RBI.
Weedsport always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .519. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Port Byron posted their closest win since May 16, 2024 on Wednesday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 4-2 victory over Cato-Meridian. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Panthers.
Connor Usowski spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered two runs (both of which were unearned) on three hits and racked up 14 Ks.
At the plate, Matt Howell was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base. The team also got some help courtesy of Nathan Usowski, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and two RBI.
Weedsport pushed their record up to 4-3 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 4.0 runs on average over those games. As for Port Byron, their win bumped their record up to 5-3.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Weedsport has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.6 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Port Byron struggles in that department as they've been averaging 11.2 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Weedsport couldn't quite finish off Port Byron in their previous matchup back in May of 2024 and fell 4-2. Will the Wolverines have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other baseball content.
