Even though the Champion Golden Flashes have not done well against the Garfield G-Men recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Monday. Champion simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Garfield 58-20 on the road. For those curious, yes, that was the biggest win Champion has managed all season.
Leading Champion to victory were Kennedy Caldwell and Isabella Meyer. Caldwell scored 14 points along with six steals and five rebounds, while Meyer scored 18 points along with seven steals. The contest was Meyer's fifth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Addie Warzala, who scored six points along with three steals.
Despite the defeat, Garfield saw an underclassman step up: Mandy Cardinal dropped a double-double on 15 points and ten rebounds. Those ten rebounds set a new season-high mark for her.
Even though they lost, Garfield were smashing the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Champion only pulled down five offensive rebounds.
Champion's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 4-1. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 58.7 points per game. As for Garfield, they still haven't won a game yet this season and fell to 0-4.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Champion will face off against LaBrae at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Hopefully LaBrae focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 13 on Monday. As for Garfield, they will head out on the road to face off against Memorial at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Ohio (Memorial is ranked 710th, while Garfield is ranked 692nd).
