This week, Akron (2-3) and Merino (5-0) square off against each other on Friday at 7:00 PM. Merino will be looking to take advantage of a struggling Akron defense that has allowed an average of 30 points per game.
The state rankings speculated that Akron might be blown out last week, and the rankings were right on the money. It has to be hurting after a devastating 48 - 24 defeat at the hands of Sedgwick County last game. Junior Derrick Poss didn't go down without a fight, though. He put up some defensive resistance with 18 tackles. Poss has been a consistent playmaker for Akron as this was the 3rd good game in a row from him.
Meanwhile, Merino was able to grind out a solid victory over Caliche last week, winning 14 - 6. 14 seems to be a good number for Merino as the team scooped up a win with the same point total the game before.
The last time they met, Akron really took it to Merino, winning 45 - 0. The rematch might be a little tougher for Akron since the team will be on Merino's home field this time. We'll soon find out whether that makes a difference or not.
