The Brookfield Warriors suffered their biggest defeat since December 14, 2023 on Thursday. They ended up on the wrong side of a rough 51-26 walloping at the hands of Champion. While losing is never fun, Brookfield can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Ohio basketball rankings (they are ranked 654th, while Champion is ranked 265th).
Several Warriors players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Cailey Wellman, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 13 rebounds. Wellman is absolutely dominating the rebound category: she's posted at least eight every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Mya Jumper, who scored 12 points.
Brookfield struggled to work together and finished the game with only two assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Champion racked up 13 assists.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Champion to victory, but perhaps none more so than Isabella Meyer, who scored 16 points along with six assists and five rebounds. Meyer is absolutely dominating the point category: she's posted at least 15 every time she's taken the court this season. Kayla Haynie was another key contributor, scoring 17 points along with two steals.
Brookfield has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost five of their last six matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-10 record this season. As for Champion, the win (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 11-4.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Brookfield will take on Liberty at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Liberty and Brookfield are at an even 5-5 over their past ten head-to-heads. As for Champion, they the luxury of staying home another game and will welcome Garfield at 7:00 p.m. on January 17th. Hopefully Garfield focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 28 on Thursday.
