III Section III recap Oct. 16, 2012
Thunderbird was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from sixth to fourth in III Section III. The Chiefs vanquished Moon Valley 49-0 earlier in the week.
Desert Edge extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Liberty, 26-0. This was the team's eighth consecutive win.
Emanuel Gant put up the best numbers through the air as Tempe defeated Arcadia. He finished with 32 completions for 493 yards and five touchdowns. Gant's favorite target this week was Osvaldo Gomez, who caught eight passes for 147 yards.
Joey Gatewood was the best wideout in the league this week as Paradise Valley fell to Sunrise Mountain. Gatewood racked up 17 receptions for 190 yards. Jordan Brown helped Paradise Valley's passing attack out by catching eight balls for 120 yards.
Kani Benoit was the most productive running back in III Section III this week. He ran for 220 yards on 17 carries as Thunderbird lost to the Mustangs. Bryant Pelt also contributed to the rushing game with 42 yards on the ground.
6-foot-4 quarterback Ryan Finley of Paradise Valley is the league leader in passing yards this season with 2435. He has also thrown 26 touchdowns. On the ground, Brent Wittenwyler's team's Benoit has rushed for 1500 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Massiah Smith. The Tempe star has 53 catches for 737 yards.
Entering into this week's contest against the Titans, Luke Rubenzer is short just 127 passing yards to break 2,000 on the season. Accruing a total of 24 touchdowns this year, Rubenzer has thrown for 1873 yards with six interceptions.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when the Sabercats take on Arcadia. As it stands, Saguaro is in third, while Lenny Abt's team is in eighth.
Jason Mohns' team took down Coronado 63-0 last week, the largest margin of any game. Rubenzer threw for 164 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 68 yards in the win.
