WPIAL AAAA Foothills recap Oct. 16, 2012
Penn-Trafford extended the longest winning streak in WPIAL AAAA Foothills this week by beating Kiski Area, 27-0. The victory was the sixth in a row for the team.
Altoona moved up to 241 from 305 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Lions climbed the ranks as a result of topping Greater Latrobe 34-23.
Gateway's dynamic duo of Thomas Woodson and Montae Nicholson proved tough for Norwin to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Woodson threw for 278 yards and five touchdowns and Nicholson had 121 yards receiving. Tale Brisker helped Gateway's passing attack out by catching one ball for 63 yards.
Lincoln Clayton was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 16 carries, he ran for 80 yards as the Cavaliers defeated the Knights. Patrick Turner also contributed to the rushing game with 23 yards on the ground.
Gateway's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Gators feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Woodson has thrown for 1367 yards and 15 touchdowns this season, while Nicholson has 12 catches for 383 yards. Andre Martin leads the league in rushing with 647 yards.
The top two teams in the league will face off this week when first place Penn-Trafford takes on second place Gateway. Penn-Trafford bested Kiski Area last week, while Gateway beat Norwin.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when Terry M Smith CAA's team takes on John Ruane's team. The Gators have allowed 84 points this season, while the Warriors have given up 87. Gateway allowed 14 points last week as it defeated Art Traeggesor's team.
Altoona made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 5,633 from 6,887. They were able to move up in the ranks after a 34-23 victory over the Wildcats last week.
