The Alexander Spartans lost against the Athens Bulldogs back in December of 2023, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Thursday. Alexander fell 45-38 to Athens. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Alexander in their matchups with Athens: they've now lost four in a row.
Despite the loss, Alexander had strong showings from Lily Ryder, who scored 14 points along with five rebounds, and Mckenna Moore, who scored eight points along with 12 rebounds. Moore hasn't dropped below eight rebounds for four straight games.
Athens got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Asa Holcombe out in front who scored 12 points along with eight assists and seven rebounds. Holcombe has been hot recently, having posted three or more steals the last four times she's played. Another player making a difference was Alexis Koopal, who scored eight points along with 12 rebounds and two steals.
Alexander's defeat ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 11-7. As for Athens, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won ten of their last 11 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 16-4 record this season.
Alexander will head out on the road to square off against Trimble at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Trimble will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Ohio Rankings (they are ranked 608th, while Alexander is ranked 292nd). As for Athens, they will head out on the road to take on Vinton County at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Athens will roll in looking for their sixth straight victory, something Vinton County surely won't give up without a fight.
