Even though the Otay Ranch Mustangs scored an imposing 59 points on Friday, the Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders still came out on top. Mater Dei Catholic secured a 64-59 W over Otay Ranch. Given Mater Dei Catholic's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 178th, while Otay Ranch is ranked 406th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Leading Mater Dei Catholic to victory were Lincoln Grogan and Maseyo Elliott. Grogan scored 19 points along with eight rebounds, while Elliott scored 23 points along with six rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Elliott has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Josiah Jefferson, who scored nine points along with two blocks.
Defeat or not, Otay Ranch got some senior leadership from Dion Harvey and Percy Whittaker. Harvey scored 17 points along with five rebounds, while Whittaker. scored 15 points along with eight rebounds and two steals. Harvey is trending in the right direction, as he's improved his point production for three games straight. Fabian Resler was another key contributor, scoring seven points along with five rebounds.
Even though they lost, Otay Ranch were working as a unit and finished the game with 14 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Mater Dei Catholic only racked up three assists.
Mater Dei Catholic is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 16-12 record this season. As for Otay Ranch, their loss dropped their record down to 10-18.
