South Wake had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They blew past the Durham Academy Cavaliers 73-43 on Tuesday. Winning may never get old, but the Sabres sure are getting used to it with their 13th in a row dating back to last season.
Leading South Wake to victory were Rebekah Hartzell and Emma Crissman. Hartzell shot 59% from the field en route to 27 points along with six boards and five steals, while Crissman went 9-for-15 to rack up 21 points and three steals. Those 21 points gave Crissman a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Sydnee Woolard, who almost dropped a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
South Wake smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Durham Academy only pulled down seven.
Several Cavaliers players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Naomi Adigun, who posted eight points and 13 boards.
Durham Academy is on a five-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-2.
South Wake wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 64-16 win against Lowcountry Wildcats Athletics on the 14th. As for Durham Academy, they have also already played their next contest, a 65-52 victory against Durham School of the Arts on the 13th.
