For the first time this season, Jones will have a chance to prove themselves in a conference matchup. After each having a week off, they and the Perry Maroons will shake off the cobwebs and hit the field against one another at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Jones has three straight wins, Perry has six straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Jones gave up the first points two weeks ago, but they didn't give up any more after. Everything went their way against Bethany as they made off with a 43-19 victory. The Longhorns pushed the score to 36-13 by the end of the third, a deficit the Bronchos had little chance of recovering from.
Jones' win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Jonquay Johnson, who rushed for 166 yards and a pair of touchdowns while picking up 10.4 yards per carry, and also picked up 35 receiving yards and one score. Johnson was no stranger to the big play, taking off on a dash that went for 54 yards. Acyn Hansen was another key player, rushing for 64 yards and one TD on only nine carries.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Jones was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 295 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 246 rushing yards every time they've taken the field this season.
Special teams also deserves some recognition, posting 11 points in total. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Hunter Purvis, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown.
Meanwhile, Perry lost 34-14 to Luther two weeks ago.
Jones will have to contain Andrew Kukuk as he made an impact in Perry's last game. He rushed for 135 yards and a pair of scores. Asher Robinson helped out on the ground, rushing for 81 yards.
Jones' record now sits at 3-0. As for Perry, their loss dropped their record down to 0-3.
Everything came up roses for Jones against Perry in their previous meeting back in September of 2024, as the team secured a 29-0 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Longhorns since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
