Basketball Game Preview: Willcox Cowboys vs. Desert Christian Eagles

The Willcox Cowboys will square off against the Desert Christian Eagles at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Willcox is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 51.4 points per game this season.

On Tuesday, Willcox humbled San Miguel with a 73-15 victory. Given the Cowboys' advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 117th, while the Vipers are ranked 309th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Willcox got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Maddie Bennett out in front who dropped a double-double on ten points and 12 rebounds. What's more, Bennett also racked up five assists, the most she's had since back in December of 2024. Another player making a difference was Gabriela Galaz, who posted 12 points and eight boards.

Willcox smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 30 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in ten consecutive contests.

Meanwhile, it was a Battle of the Birds when Desert Christian faced off against The Gregory School on Saturday. Desert Christian snuck past The Gregory School with a 31-25 victory. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Eagles.

Willcox has also been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 16-7 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 59.3 points per game. As for Desert Christian, their win bumped their record up to 9-12.

Everything came up roses for Willcox against Desert Christian in their previous meeting back in November of 2024, as the team secured a 50-19 victory. Does Willcox have another victory up their sleeve, or will Desert Christian turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
