The Newport Buffaloes's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Saturday after their seventh straight loss. They fell to Harrisburg Christian 41-37. Newport was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Harrisburg Christian apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in January of 2023.
Newport's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Logan Burns, who scored five points along with seven rebounds and three blocks. The team also got some help courtesy of Landon Zaring, who scored six points along with eight rebounds and three steals.
Harrisburg Christian was led to victory by Cooper Gesswein and Eli Stargel. Gesswein scored 14 points along with two blocks, while Stargel scored eight points along with four steals. Stargel is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last four games he's played. Evan Sunday was another key contributor, scoring six points along with two steals.
Newport has been struggling recently, as they've lost 12 of their last 13 matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-15 record this season. As for Harrisburg Christian, the win got them back to even at 7-7.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Newport will take on East Juniata at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Hopefully East Juniata focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up nine on Saturday. As for Harrisburg Christian, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Varsity Opponent at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
