After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Lincoln-Way East, The Sandburg Eagles were happy to have found some success on Friday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 31-28 victory over Stagg. Given Sandburg's advantage in MaxPreps' Illinois football rankings (they are ranked 60th, while Stagg is ranked 210th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
When it comes to explaining why Stagg lost, one person who can't be blamed is Lebarion Gilmore. Despite the final result, he threw for 239 yards and three touchdowns, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground. Another player making a difference was Anthony Sukalo, who gained 105 total yards and a touchdown.
Sandburg's victory was their third straight at home, bumping their overall record up to 6-3. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 34.3 points per game. As for Stagg, they are on a six-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-6.
Sandburg will face off against Minooka at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Minooka will be looking to extend their current three-game winning streak. Stagg does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
