Basketball Recap: Douglas County Takes a Loss

Douglas County played a tough match on Wednesday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They took a blow against the Chaparral Wolverines, falling 73-45. While losing is never fun, the Huskies can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 146th, while the Wolverines are ranked fourth).

When it comes to explaining why Douglas County lost, don't look at Roman Saiz. Despite the final result, he posted seven points along with five assists and three steals. Those five assists gave Saiz a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Henry Shoemaker, who scored seven points.

Chaparral was led to victory by Luke Howery and Luke Williams. Howery went 8 for 12 on his way to 21 points in addition to seven boards and five assists, while Williams almost dropped a double-double on 15 points and nine rebounds. Williams has been hot, having also posted three or more blocks the last six times he's played. Christian Williams was another key player, putting up ten points along with seven boards and three steals.

Douglas County has been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last seven games, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-11 record this season. As for Chaparral, the victory was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 13-3.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Douglas County will head out to take on Mountain Vista at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Mountain Vista knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past 16 contests -- so hopefully Douglas County likes a good challenge. As for Chaparral, they are taking a road trip to face off against Regis Jesuit at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Chaparral is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 68 points per game this season.
