2A/1A Western Highlands recap Oct. 23, 2012
Hendersonville extended the longest winning streak in 2A/1A Western Highlands this week by beating Thomas Jefferson Academy, 35-21. This was the team's seventh consecutive win.
Madison led the league in scoring this week after putting up 42 points on Mitchell.
Trevor Robinson put up the best numbers through the air as Mountain Heritage beat Avery County. He finished with a total of 11 completions for 178 yards and two touchdowns. Robinson's favorite target this week was Daulton Buchanan, who caught one pass for 59 yards.
Efrim Borders was the best wideout in the league this week as the Gryphons lost to Hendersonville. Borders racked up seven receptions for 63 yards. Mason Martin helped Thomas Jefferson Academy's passing attack out by catching two balls for 26 yards.
Desean Jackson was the most productive running back in 2A/1A Western Highlands this week. He ran for 271 yards on 26 carries as Bj Laughter's team fell to Bj Laughter's team. Grant Rivers also contributed to the rushing game with 68 yards on the ground.
Thanks to the talents of Rivers and Jackson the Bearcats have been able to do all sorts of things on offense. Rivers leads the league in passing with 1468 yards, while Jackson has rushed for 1571 yards this season. Jerry Cash's team's Borders leads the league in receiving yards with 756 on 50 catches.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Hendersonville takes on Polk County. At the moment, the Bearcats are in second, while the Wolverines are in third.
The Cougars made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 9,913 from 10,279. The improvement came about via a 36-28 victory over the Vikings last week.
