Softball Recap: Marist Snags Third Victory in Last Four Games

12 must be Marist's lucky number: they beat Cottage Grove with that score not once but twice on Tuesday. The Spartans beat the Lions by the very same score they won with in their prior game: 12-2. The Spartans might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five matchups by seven runs or more this season.

Arabella Martinez spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on four hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Lera Basom and Tizita Martin did most of the damage at the plate: Basom went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two doubles, and one run, while Martin went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and three runs. Martin has been hot recently, having posted three or more hits the last four times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Finley Schweigert, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base and one run.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Marist kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in eight consecutive games.

Marist has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-7 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 15.8 runs over those games. As for Cottage Grove, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 7-7.

Marist will have a chance to go back-to-back against the Lions: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
