The Poly Engineers will head out on the road to face off against the Mergenthaler Vo-Tech Mustangs at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Poly has five straight wins, Mergenthaler Vo-Tech has eight straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Poly put the finishing touches on their 15th blowout victory of the season on Friday. They claimed a resounding 75-15 win over City College on the road. Given Poly's advantage in MaxPreps' Maryland basketball rankings (they are ranked 15th, while City College is ranked 86th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Poly found their leader in underclassman London Elliot, who almost dropped a double-double on 19 points and nine rebounds. Sierra Georges was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with seven rebounds.
Meanwhile, Mergenthaler Vo-Tech had to suffer through a rough 41-3 loss at the hands of Coppin Academy. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points Mergenthaler Vo-Tech has scored all season.
Poly's victory was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 20-1. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 63.6 points per game. As for Mergenthaler Vo-Tech, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-8.
Everything came up roses for Poly against Mergenthaler Vo-Tech in their previous meeting back in January of 2023 as the squad secured a 113-13 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Poly since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
