Wilby is on a three-game streak of home losses, Derby a 15-game streak of away losses, but someone's luck is about to change. The Wilby Wildcats will take on the Derby Red Raiders at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Having both just faced considerable losses, both teams are looking to turn things around.
Wilby suffered their biggest defeat since December 12, 2023 last Thursday. They ended up on the wrong side of a rough 54-32 walloping at the hands of Holy Cross. While losing is never fun, Wilby can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Connecticut basketball rankings (they are ranked 137th, while Holy Cross is ranked eighth).
Meanwhile, Derby was the victim of a rough 62-41 defeat at the hands of Watertown on Friday. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat Derby has suffered against Watertown since December 27, 2016.
Despite the loss, Derby saw an underclassman step up: Shea Gray scored 21 points along with six rebounds and two steals. That was a full 51.2% of Derby's points, marking the eighth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Wilby's loss dropped their record down to 1-8. As for Derby, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-11.
Everything went Wilby's way against Derby when the teams last played back in December of 2022 as Wilby made off with a 43-19 victory. Does Wilby have another victory up their sleeve, or will Derby turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
