Auburn has gone 9-1 against George Wythe recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Thursday. The Eagles will challenge the Maroons at 5:00 p.m. Auburn will be looking to extend their current nine-game winning streak.
Auburn is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Monday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand Fort Chiswell a 10-0 shutout. Considering the Eagles have won 16 contests by more than six runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.
The result came thanks to McKenzie Booth's shutout, as she gave up just a hit and racked up 14 Ks. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Hope Wilson, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and two RBI. That's the most doubles she has posted since back in March. Ariel Mullins was another key player, going 2-for-3 with three runs and one RBI.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Auburn kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 11 hits in three consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, George Wythe got the win against Grayson County on Monday by a conclusive 8-2. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Maroons.
Caroline Harris spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on six hits.
At the plate, Madison Hatcher was excellent, going 3-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double. That double was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Madalyn Morris, who went 1-for-3 with one home run.
Auburn pushed their record up to 19-4 with the win, which was their seventh straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.0 runs over those games. As for George Wythe, their win bumped their record up to 9-13.
George Wythe's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Auburn has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .505. It's a different story for George Wythe, though, as they've only averaged .344. Will they be able to contain Auburn's hitters?
Auburn came out on top in a nail-biter against George Wythe when the teams last played two weeks ago, sneaking past 4-3. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Eagles since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
