On Wednesday, the Newtown Nighthawks faced the Masuk Panthers in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Newtown was the victim of a rough 42-20 defeat at the hands of Masuk. Newtown was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Masuk apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in November of 2022.
Several Nighthawks players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Jayden Taylor, who picked up 150 receiving yards and a touchdown. Another player making a difference was James Hartigan, who picked up 139 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Jason Champagne was his usual excellent self, rushing for 217 yards and four touchdowns while picking up 9.9 yards per carry for Masuk. Shane Walker was another key contributor, picking up 106 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Newtown's defeat dropped their record down to 8-2. As for Masuk, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 8-2.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Newtown will take on Shelton at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Masuk, they will look to defend their home field on Tuesday against Cheshire at 6:00 p.m. Cheshire's defense has only allowed 9.1 points per game this season, so Masuk's offense will have their work cut out for Masuk.
