The Mid Valley Spartans are taking a road trip to face off against the Western Wayne Wildcats at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Mid Valley is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.4 runs per game this season.
On Monday, Mid Valley needed a bit of extra time to put away Dunmore. They skirted past the Bucks 5-4. Five seems to be a good number for the Spartans as the squad scooped up a win with the same number of runs in their previous game.
Lorenzo Hernandez and Nick Mills made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Hernandez tossed four innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. Meanwhile, Mills struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances. At bat, Hernandez went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI, while Mills got on base in four of his five plate appearances with one run.
In other batting news, Carter Musewicz was excellent, going 1-for-5 with one home run.
Meanwhile, Western Wayne lost 13-3 to Old Forge on Monday. That's two games in a row now that the Wildcats have lost by exactly ten runs.
Western Wayne saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ethan Lamberton, who went 1-for-2 with one run.
The victory made it two in a row for Mid Valley and bumps their season record up to 12-3. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of 1.5 runs across that stretch. As for Western Wayne, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 5-9.
Western Wayne's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Wednesday. Mid Valley has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.6 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Western Wayne, though, as they've been averaging only 3.7 strikeouts. Will Mid Valley keep running through batters, or will the Wildcats buck the trend?
Mid Valley took their win against Western Wayne in their previous matchup on April 7th by a conclusive 10-1 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Spartans since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
