The St. Catherine's Saints will face off against the Trinity Episcopal Titans at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. St. Catherine's is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.2 runs per game this season.
St. Catherine's is probably headed into the matchup with a chip on their shoulder considering Midlothian just ended the team's 14-game winning streak on Wednesday. They took a 5-0 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Trojans. The Saints were red-hot at the plate heading into the contest (they scored no less than ten runs in the four games prior), but the Trojans' pitchers proved too tough.
St. Catherine's saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Izzy Viruet, who went 1-for-3 with one triple.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Trinity Episcopal). Their pitchers stepped up to hand St. Margaret's a 25-0 shutout on Tuesday. The Titans have beaten the Scotties the last five times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Scotties has come to flipping the script.
Brooke Shelton and Cooper Beatty were major factors while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Shelton struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). Meanwhile, Beatty tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. At bat, Shelton went a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, five runs, and two stolen bases, while Beatty went 2-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, and one triple. Those two stolen bases gave Shelton a new career-high.
In other batting news, Trinity Episcopal got a massive performance out of Magovern Rollins, who went 4-for-5 with one home run, six RBI, and three runs. Those four hits gave Rollins a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Cabel Berkeyheiser, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs, four RBI, and one stolen base.
Trinity Episcopal's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 9-3. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for St. Catherine's, their defeat dropped their record down to 15-2.
Everything went St. Catherine's way against Trinity Episcopal when the teams last played last Monday, as St. Catherine's made off with an 11-1 win. Will the Saints repeat their success, or do the Titans have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
