Mater Dei is ranked highly in their home state and on Friday they took on another highly ranked team in the form of Bishop Gorman. The Monarchs skirted past the Gaels 27-24. The Monarchs haven't had any issues with the Gaels recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive victory against them.

Mater Dei got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Ryan Hopkins out in front who threw for 251 yards and three TDs while completing 83.3% of his passes, and also rushed for 67 yards on only eight carries. Another player making a difference was Mark Bowman, who picked up 105 receiving yards and a pair of scores.

Despite the loss, Bishop Gorman still got an impressive performance from Maika Eugenio, who threw for 295 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 10.9 yards per attempt, and also punched in one TD on the ground. 133 of Eugenio's passing yards were hauled in by Massiah Mingo.

Mater Dei's victory bumped their record up to 3-1. As for Bishop Gorman, their defeat was their first of the season and makes their record 4-1.

Mater Dei will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against Orange Lutheran at 7:00 p.m. on October 3. This will be the Monarchs' first chance to prove their worth in the conference. As for Bishop Gorman, they have already played their next game, a 14-0 win against Santa Margarita on the 27th.
