Mater Dei is ranked highly in their home state and on Friday they took on another highly ranked team in the form of Bishop Gorman. The Monarchs came out on top in a nail-biter against the Gaels, sneaking past 27-24. The Monarchs haven't had any issues with the Gaels recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive win against them.

Mater Dei's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Ryan Hopkins, who threw for 251 yards and three TDs while completing 83.3% of his passes, and also rushed for 67 yards on only eight carries. Mark Bowman also helped out as he racked up 105 receiving yards.

When it comes to explaining why Bishop Gorman lost, don't look at Maika Eugenio. Despite the final result, he threw for 295 yards and a pair of touchdowns while picking up 10.9 yards per attempt, and also punched in one score on the ground. A healthy portion of Eugenio's aerial production (133 yards to be exact) went to Massiah Mingo.

Mater Dei's record is now 3-1. As for Bishop Gorman, their loss was their first of the season and makes their record 4-1.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. After each having a week off, Mater Dei and Orange Lutheran will shake off the cobwebs and hit the field against one another at 7:00 p.m. on October 3. This will be the Monarchs' first chance to prove their worth in the conference. As for Bishop Gorman, they are taking a road trip to challenge Santa Margarita at 7:00 p.m. on the 27th. The Gaels will need to watch out since the Eagles have now posted at least 31 points in their last three games.
