The Homestead Spartans will venture away from home to take on the Columbia City Eagles at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Homestead is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9 runs per game this season.
While Homestead didn't have the best season last year (they finished 11-14), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They put the hurt on Fort Wayne Northrop with a sharp 18-6 victory on Saturday. The result was nothing new for the Spartans, who have now won five games by seven runs or more so far this season.

Homestead let Grace Jordan and Olivia Schultheis run wild. Jordan went 4-for-5 with one home run, six RBI, and four runs, while Schultheis went 3-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. Those four runs gave Jordan a new career-high. Braeli Borchers also deserves some recognition as she hit her first doubles of the season.
Homestead kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 18 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, Columbia City came tearing into Monday's matchup with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 9.5 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured an 8-7 W against the Braves. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Eagles have posted since March 25th.
Emma Hiss spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and three unearned) runs on nine hits and racked up nine Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Hanna Maggard, who went 2-for-3 with one home run. Another player making a difference was Eden Taylor, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Columbia City's victory was their sixth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 9-2. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.2 runs on average over those games. As for Homestead, their record is now 7-3.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Tuesday. Homestead hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.9 home runs per game. However, it's not like Columbia City struggles in that department as they've been averaging 1.1 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down. Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other softball content.
