California Division I All-State Football Teams

State champions De La Salle (Concord) and Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita), along with Southern Section Northern Division champion Westlake (Westlake Village), combine to place 12 players on the MaxPreps Division I California All-State Team, including the Player of the Year.

Michael Barton is the Player of the Year after leading a De La Salle defense that shut out an undefeated Westlake team 35-0 in the CIF Open Division Bowl Game and allowed only 59 points over the final 11 games of the season.

A Cal recruit, Barton was named the Player of the Year in the San Francisco Bay Area by the San Francisco Chronicle. According to Spartan defensive coordinator Terry Eidson, Barton ranks among the best ever at the school, including NFL linebacker D.J. Williams and college standout Kevin Simon.

"He just has such a great motor and anticipates so well," Eidson told the Chronicle. "He hardly made a bad read all season. He was all over the field. He will excel and get the most of what he's got."

Barton edged out Santa Margarita quarterback Johnny Stanton, who led his team to the Division I bowl championship over Bellarmine (San Jose) and Westlake quarterback Justin Moore, whose team fell to De La Salle in the Open Division bowl game.

De La Salle lands three on the team with offensive lineman Luc Hamilton and defensive back Josh Jenkins joining Barton. Santa Margarita had four and Westlake had five apiece.

The MaxPreps Division I All-State Team consists of players who competed in the section enrollment divisions the CIF designated as qualifiers to the Division I state bowl game.
