Basketball Recap: West Craven Takes a Loss

West Craven was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their fifth straight loss dating back to last season. They were six points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 56-50 heartbreaker at the hands of the Havelock Rams. The Eagles were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Rams apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in December of 2023.

When it comes to explaining why West Craven lost, don't look at Jimmie West Lll. Despite the final result, he dropped a double-double on 19 points and 20 boards. West Lll is crushing it when it comes to boards: he's pulled down at least ten every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Shelby Cherry Jr, who went 5 of 11 on his way to 12 points in addition to seven assists and four steals.

Even though they lost, West Craven smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in three consecutive games.

Havelock's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Chris Strong led the charge by almost dropping a double-double on 15 points and nine boards. What's more, Strong also racked up three steals, the most he's had since back in November of 2023. Another player making a difference was Jaylen Hewitt, who posted 11 points and five rebounds.

West Craven's loss dropped their record down to 0-3. As for Havelock, their win ended a four-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 2-3.

West Craven didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 63-53 victory against Ayden - Grifton on the 13th. As for Havelock, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next match, an 82-57 win against New Bern on the 13th.
