St. Mary is a perfect 3-0 against Calhan since June of 2021 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Pirates will face off against the Bulldogs at 4:00 p.m. One thing working in St. Mary's favor is that they have posted at least ten runs in their last three matches.
While St. Mary's didn't have the best season last year (they finished 8-15), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They were the clear victors by a 17-0 margin over Colorado Springs Christian on Saturday. 17 seems to be a good number for the Pirates as the team scooped up a victory with the same number of runs in their previous game.
Ron Karin made a splash while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run while striking out eight over four innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three stolen bases, four runs, and four RBI. He is becoming a predictor of St. Mary's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 0-4 when he doesn't).

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Ryan Strub, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with two stolen bases, four RBI, and two runs. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high. Simon Clune also deserves some recognition as he hit his first triple of the season.
St. Mary's kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Colorado Springs Christian only managed three hits.
Meanwhile, Calhan had to endure a six-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They came out on top against Elbert by a score of 9-4 on Monday. The game was the first time Calhan has beaten Elbert on their field since June 3, 2021.
Joseph Brecko spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered three earned (and one unearned) runs on eight hits and racked up ten Ks.
On the hitting side, Wyatt Crippen was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances. Toby Monger was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances.
St. Mary's win was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 6-4. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.2 runs over those games. As for Calhan, their record now sits at 2-8-2.
Calhan's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: St. Mary's hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .370. It's a different story for Calhan, though, as they've only averaged .220. Will they be able to contain St. Mary's hitters?
St. Mary's took their win against Calhan in their previous meeting back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 13-3 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Pirates since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
