Willow Glen and Leigh are an even 3-3 against one another since March of 2017, but likely not for long. The Rams will welcome the Longhorns at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Willow Glen has 13 straight wins, Leigh has three straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Willow Glen's hitters will try to repeat the strong performance they gave on Tuesday, when they got past Valley Christian's usually-dominant pitching crew. The Rams blew past the Warriors 10-3. The result was nothing new for the Rams, who have now won six contests by seven runs or more so far this season.
Alanna Clincy made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 13 batters over six innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in ten consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and one double. That's the most hits she has posted since back in February.
In other batting news, Haley Ocumen was incredible, going 2-for-3 with one home run, two RBI, and one double. Lea Crawford was another key player, going 1-for-2 with one home run and two runs.
Willow Glen hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Valley Christian struck out 14 times.
Meanwhile, Leigh didn't have quite enough to beat Santa Teresa on Tuesday and fell 9-7.
Reagyn Hider was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-3. Another player making a difference was Mady Cabrera, who scored a run and stole two bases while going 2-for-3.
Willow Glen pushed their record up to 13-0 with the victory, which was their sixth straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.8 runs over those games. As for Leigh, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-12-1.
Leigh's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Thursday. Willow Glen has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.1 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Leigh, though, as they've been averaging an even more impressive 3.8 strikeouts. Will Willow Glen keep running through batters, or will the Longhorns buck the trend?
Everything went Willow Glen's way against Leigh when the teams last played back in April of 2024, as Willow Glen made off with a 12-1 victory. Will the Rams repeat their success, or do the Longhorns have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
