The Desert Vista Thunder are taking a road trip to square off against the Boulder Creek Jaguars at 3:45 p.m. on Friday. Desert Vista is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 12.3 runs per game this season.
Desert Vista is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Arizona's top teams: Xavier College Prep, who was ranked 12th at the time (Desert Vista was ranked 23rd). The Thunder lost 11-5 to the Gators on Thursday. That makes it the first time this season the Thunder have let down their home crowd.
Jaymie Larney was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Mckenzie Leitgen, who scored a run while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.
Meanwhile, Boulder Creek posted their closest victory since February 22, 2024 on Thursday. They had just enough and edged out Liberty 3-2. The win continues a trend for the Jaguars in their matchups with the Lions: they've now won six in a row.
Kinsey Wilcox spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on seven hits.
At the plate, Lauren Grunert was incredible, going 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April of 2024.
Boulder Creek's victory was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 15-4. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.2 runs over those games. As for Desert Vista, this is the second loss in a row for them and also nudges their season record down to 15-4.
Friday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Desert Vista hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .495. However, it's not like Boulder Creek struggles in that department as they've averaged .390. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Desert Vista took their victory against Boulder Creek in their previous meeting back in February of 2024 by a conclusive 12-2 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Thunder since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
