Though Marietta Lassiter (Ga.) senior quarterback Hutson Mason already had established several Georgia state passing records, he played what coach Chip Lindsey called his greatest game ever Friday night during a 70-49 victory over South Gwinnett.

Performing in front of a packed house during the second round of the Class AAAAA playoffs, the 6-foot-3, 185-pounder was on target 32 times in 39 attempts for a state-record 552 yards and a state-record-tying eight touchdowns. His eight touchdown passes are tied for No. 3 in high school history, just two short of the record shared by five players. He threw only one interception.
He accomplished all of this in only three quarters.
"He’s the most accurate guy I’ve ever been around," Lindsey said. "It’s going to get harder (in the playoffs), but he’s the kind of kid who, as long as we win, I don’t think it matters (if he continues to set records)."
Mason also broke the Georgia single-season record with 54 touchdown passes. In just two years, he has thrown for 7,971 yards and 82 touchdowns and is approaching some more records that have been amassed in three or four years.
The 12-0 Trojans also got an outstanding effort from senior Griffin Roelle, who snared 12 passes for 213 yards and four touchdowns.
Next up is the Trojans’ first-ever quarterfinal game, which will pit them against Colquitt County, which is coached by Russ Propst, whom Lindsey served under at Hoover, Ala. Colquitt is fresh from an upset of Stephenson.
