After five lead changes,
Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) took the lead for good when
Khalfani Muhammad ran for a touchdown with under a minute left in the fifth quarter and held on to upset
Crespi (Encino, Calif.) 40-34 on Saturday.
The teams went into the locker room at halftime deadlocked at three. The Knights took the lead for good on a Muhammad touchdown run in the fifth quarter.
The loss came as a surprise for the Celts, which entered the game ranked No. 6 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings for California, while Notre Dame was ranked No. 44. Crespi came into the game having won three of the past seven games between the two teams.
Timothy Hayes played well for CHS. The senior ran for two touchdowns.
ND's standout player in the win was Muhammad. The senior running back ran for three touchdowns. A member of the Top 25 Wingbacks, Muhammad has now scored six touchdowns on the season.
The Encino school came in giving up 13.4 points per game this season. The Celts struggled against the Sherman Oaks school, which came in averaging 32.3 points per game.
The victory will ease some of the sting of the Knights' close 28-26 loss to Crespi last season.
The win was a nice bounce back for Notre Dame, which lost to Alemany last week, 49-42. The defeat comes as a step back for Crespi, which notched a 20-7 victory over Loyola in its previous outing.
Notre Dame (5-3) goes up against Loyola in a Serra game matchup next week, while Crespi (7-1) locks horns with Bishop Amat also in a Serra game.
