This season hasn't been kind to the South Effingham Mustangs, who are still winless after their 17th game. They fell 83-72 to Brunswick on Thursday. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
South Effingham's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Corbin McGuire, who scored 27 points along with three steals. That's the first time this season that McGuire scored 15 or more points. Aidan Harris was another key contributor, scoring 18 points along with seven rebounds and three steals.
Brunswick was led to victory by Craig Battle and Caleb Butler. Battle scored 22 points along with six rebounds and four steals, while Butler scored 18 points along with six rebounds and six steals. Butler hasn't dropped below 15 points for three straight games. Another player making a difference was Joshua Daniel, who scored 12 points along with six assists and five rebounds.
South Effingham dropped their record down to 0-17 with that loss, which was their 16th straight on the road dating back to last season. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 51.2 points per game. As for Brunswick, their win ended a six-game drought at home and bumped them up to 8-13.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. South Effingham won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Lakeside at 7:30 p.m. on January 26th. Lakeside knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past three matchups -- so hopefully South Effingham likes a good challenge. As for Brunswick, they will head out on the road to take on Hilton Head Christian Academy at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. Hilton Head Christian Academy presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Brunswick in their respective states (Hilton Head Christian Academy is ranked 130th in South Carolina, while Brunswick is ranked 282nd in Georgia).
