The Combs Coyotes will square off against the St. Mary's Knights at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Combs has given up an average of 12.7 runs per game this season, so hopefully the team got some pitching drills in this week.
Combs is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to ten runs last Monday, they were much more limited against Cactus Shadows on Monday. They came up short against the Falcons, falling 16-1.
Combs saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Elliana Snyder, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-2.
Meanwhile, St. Mary's had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 11 runs) and they went ahead and made it three last Saturday. They blew past the Cougars 11-1. While the Knights didn't have the best season last year (they finished 6-14), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
Meredith Schager spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on four hits.
At the plate, St. Mary's got a massive performance out of Giahni Ruiz, who fired off two home runs, three runs, and three RBI while going 2-for-4. The team also got some help courtesy of Marianna Hernandez, who scored three runs and stole Two bases. while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances.
St. Mary's was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .407. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Sahuaro only posted a batting average of .167.
St. Mary's win bumped their record up to 5-2. As for Combs, they dropped their record down to 3-6 with the defeat, which was their third straight on the road.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Wednesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Combs has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.6 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like St. Mary's struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.6 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Combs skirted past St. Mary's 13-12 in their previous matchup back in March of 2018. Will Combs repeat their success, or does St. Mary's have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
