The Bishop Kelley Comets will head out on the road to face off against the Deer Creek Antlers at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. Bishop Kelley is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.3 runs per game this season.
Bishop Kelley managed to slip by Mustang the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. The Comets lost 13-5 to the Broncos on Friday. That's two games in a row now that the Comets have lost by exactly eight runs.
Bishop Kelley got a big performance out of Tommy Lord, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one double. Max Gipson also deserves some recognition as he launched his first home run of the season.
Meanwhile, Deer Creek had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 5.8 runs) and they went ahead and made it five on Thursday. They were the clear victors by an 11-0 margin over the Mustangs. Considering the Antlers have won three games by more than seven runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Grant Adams looked comfortable as he pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one walk any time he's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, Grant Richards and Walker Edwards did most of the damage at the plate: Richards went 2-for-3 with two triples, two runs, and one RBI, while Edwards went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. Richards has become a key player for Deer Creek: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 2-4 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Tristan Tomlin, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
Deer Creek always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .571. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive matchups.
Deer Creek now has a winning record of 5-4. As for Bishop Kelley, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 11-4.
Saturday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Bishop Kelley has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .466. However, it's not like Deer Creek struggles in that department as they've averaged .441. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
