South Mecklenburg and Ardrey Kell are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2021, but likely not for long. The South Mecklenburg Sabres will be playing at home against the Ardrey Kell Knights at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. South Mecklenburg is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.5 runs per game this season.
While South Mecklenburg's victory against Hopewell wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. South Mecklenburg narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past Hopewell 5-4. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Sabres have posted since February 26th.
Sofia Vayo looked comfortable as she pitched four innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits.
At the plate, South Mecklenburg's win was truly a team effort as five different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Ashlynn Hall, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3. Hall also brought in an RBI, marking her first of the season.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Ardrey Kell, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Friday. They came out on top against Charlotte Catholic by a score of 6-1 on Monday.
Jenna Volturno spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on three hits and racked up 12 Ks. The dominant performance gave her a new career-high in strikeouts.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Janey Galek, who scored two runs and stole Two bases. while going 3-for-4. Those two stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Reagan Martin, who scored a run and stole a base while getting on base in two of her three plate appearances.
Ardrey Kell hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most four strikeouts in six consecutive contests.
Ardrey Kell's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 5-5. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.7 runs on average over those games. As for South Mecklenburg, their win bumped their record up to 6-4.
Wednesday's match will be a test for both teams' pitchers. South Mecklenburg hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .406. However, it's not like Ardrey Kell struggles in that department as they've averaged .362. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
South Mecklenburg might still be hurting after the 13-2 defeat they got from Ardrey Kell in their previous meeting back in April of 2024.
