The Westlake Wolverines proved they can win big last Wednesday (they won by 25) but on Wednesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They came out on top in a nail-biter against McDonough and snuck past 46-44. The victory made it back-to-back wins for Westlake.
Raynna Ratchford continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines, scoring 17 points along with eight rebounds and five steals. She hasn't dropped below two steals for three straight games. Akeylah McPherson was another key contributor, scoring seven points along with seven rebounds and three steals.
When it comes to explaining why McDonough lost, one person who can't be blamed is Cailyn Samuel. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 18 points and ten steals. That was a full 40.9% of McDonough's points, marking the third time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Jalynn Rosier, who scored 11 points.
Westlake's victory bumped their record up to 4-5. As for McDonough, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-4.
Westlake will look to defend their home court on Friday against Chopticon at 6:30 p.m. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Maryland (Chopticon is ranked 179th, while Westlake is ranked 199th). McDonough's road trip will continue as they head out to face Huntingtown at 5:30 p.m. on January 26th. Huntingtown will be looking to extend their current three-game winning streak.
