The Iola Mustangs pushed their score all the way to 34 on Friday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They fell 44-34 to Santa Fe Trail. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Iola in their matchups with Santa Fe Trail: they've now lost six in a row.
Several Mustangs players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Landon Weide, who rushed for 63 yards and two touchdowns, and also threw for 213 yards and two touchdowns. The team also got some help courtesy of Benjamin Kerr, who rushed for 121 yards and a touchdown.
Luke Edwards was on fire for Santa Fe Trail: he threw for 376 yards and four touchdowns while completing 77.8% of his passes, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground. Another player making a difference was Trent Sleichter, who picked up 138 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Iola's defeat dropped their record down to 4-4. As for Santa Fe Trail, their win bumped their record up to 6-2.
Iola will head out on the road to face off against Parsons at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Santa Fe Trail, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Royal Valley at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Kansas (Royal Valley is ranked 141st, while Santa Fe Trail is ranked 127th).
