The Memphis Central Warriors will venture away from home to challenge the Memphis East Mustangs at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Memphis Central has eight straight wins, Memphis East has six straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Memphis Central lost a heartbreaker the last time they played Overton, but it's fair to say they got their revenge given the result of Friday's game. The Warriors put the hurt on the Wolverines with a sharp 13-5 victory on Friday. Considering the Warriors have won eight contests by more than six runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Joshua Thurmon made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.
In other pitching news, Memphis Central got a great performance from Evan Nelson as he pitched six innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off five hits.
Back at the plate, Jayden Cole and Joshua Hollowell did most of the damage at the plate: Cole scored two runs and stole three bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances, while Hollowell scored two runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4. That's the most hits Hollowell has posted since back in March of 2024. Patrick Ryan was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 1-for-4.
Memphis Central kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Overton only managed six hits.
Meanwhile, Memphis East lost 12-4 to Cordova on Thursday.
Memphis Central's win was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 13-3. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.2 runs over those games. As for Memphis East, their loss dropped their record down to 1-7.
Memphis Central took their win against Memphis East in their previous meeting back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 15-0 score. Do the Warriors have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Mustangs turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
