It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but the Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders had no problem doing just that on Friday. They skirted past Clayton 30-28. The win was nothing new for Cardinal Gibbons as they're now sitting on nine straight.
Cardinal Gibbons got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Gannon Jones out in front who threw for 190 yards and three touchdowns on only 12 passes. Jones has been hot recently, having posted three or more passing touchdowns the last five times he's played. Another player making a difference was Aiden Smalls, who picked up 73 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Cardinal Gibbons' victory was their seventh straight at home, which pushed their record up to 11-2. It's not like the team was facing easy opposition over that stretch either, as it included 9-3 Millbrook and 9-3 Leesville Road (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 61.9% over those games). As for Clayton, their loss ended a five-game streak of away wins and brought them to 10-3.
Cardinal Gibbons will head out on the road to face off against Rolesville at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Rolesville's favor is that they have now posted big point totals in their last 12 matches. Clayton does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
