Martin County has gone a perfect 5-0 against Gates County recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Wednesday. The Gators will be playing in front of their home fans against the Red Barons at 7:00 p.m. Martin County is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11.7 runs per game this season.
Martin County's usually-dominant pitching crew will be looking to make up for Tuesday's struggle, when Perquimans hitters got past them. The Gators came up short against the Pirates on Tuesday, falling 13-3. The Gators' defeat signaled the end of their four-game winning streak.
Martin County saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Erica Sturgill, who went 1-for-2 with one home run and three RBI.
Meanwhile, Gates County came into Wednesday's game having lost three straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They blew past Hobgood Charter 20-12 on Wednesday. The Red Barons might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 11 contests by eight runs or more this season.
Hailey Bauer spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and three unearned) runs on nine hits.
On the hitting side, Gates County got a massive performance out of Zoey Nowell, who went 3-for-5 with three stolen bases, three runs, and four RBI. Those four RBI gave Nowell a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Kamryn Riddick, who got on base in four of her six plate appearances with three stolen bases, four runs, and two RBI.
Gates County's victory bumped their record up to 11-9. As for Martin County, their loss dropped their record down to 18-3.
Wednesday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Martin County has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .544. However, it's not like Gates County struggles in that department as they've averaged .514. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
