The Churubusco Eagles had to endure a seven-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They walked away with a 55-48 victory over Lakeland on Tuesday. Winning is a bit easier when you make seven more threes than your opponent, as Churubusco did.
Churubusco's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Patty Wiggs led the charge by scoring 13 points along with five steals. Wiggs has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last five times she's played. Brooklyn Sinclair was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with three steals.
Lakeland's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Cara Schackow, who dropped a double-double on ten points and ten rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Dulce Canedo, who scored 14 points along with four steals.
Lakeland struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only four offensive rebounds. They are winless (0-4) when they can't control their own glass like that.
Churubusco's victory ended a five-game drought on the road and puts them at 5-14. As for Lakeland, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 3-16.
Churubusco on the road again on Friday and play against Angola at 6:00 p.m. on January 19th. Angola presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Churubusco in Indiana (Angola is ranked 126th, while Churubusco is ranked 317th). As for Lakeland, they will look to defend their home court on Friday against Hamilton at 7:00 p.m. Hamilton comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 23 points in their last three games, a trend the squad is of course eager to reverse.
