Spring Mills is 2-8 against Musselman since May of 2022 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. Spring Mills will be playing at home against Musselman at 7:00 p.m. Spring Mills is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9 runs per game this season.
Spring Mills took a loss when they played away from home on Tuesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Wednesday. Everything went their way against Mercersburg Academy as Spring Mills made off with a 15-1 win. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Cardinals considering their one-run performance the game before.
Taryn Close made a splash while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out six over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring four runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March of 2024.
In other batting news, Spring Mills got a big performance out of Jasmin Vermillion, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3. Another player making a difference was Alexis Wagner, who scored two runs and stole two bases.
Spring Mills always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .516. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Mercersburg Academy only posted an OBP of .250.
Meanwhile, while it was Musselman who put the first points on the board on Tuesday, it was Jefferson who put up more. Musselman fell just short of Jefferson by a score of 4-3. The Applemen haven't had much luck with the Cougars recently, as the team has come up short the last seven times they've met.
Allison Hoffman spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and two unearned) runs on ten hits. Those hits were her first of the season.
On the hitting side, Musselman saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Grace Hostetler, who scored a run and stole a base while going 3-for-4. That stolen base marked the first that Hostetler snagged this season.
Musselman's loss dropped their record down to 1-4. As for Spring Mills, they now have a winning record of 3-2.
Spring Mills' speedy runners might be the difference in Friday's contest. Spring Mills has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.4 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Musselman, though, as they've been averaging only 0.8 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Spring Mills continue to outrun the ball?
Spring Mills might still be hurting after the 12-4 defeat they got from Musselman when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Will Spring Mills have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more softball content.
