Football Recap: Sunlake Drops Season-High Score on Wesley Chapel

Sunlake had already proven themselves in the regular season and they didn't miss a beat now that it's playoff time. They blew past the Wesley Chapel Wildcats, posting a 53-0 victory. The Seahawks' offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.

Sunlake found their leader in sophomore Kate Smith, who threw for 131 yards and five touchdowns while completing 74.1% of her passes, and also rushed for 45 yards and one TD. Smith's passing game has become a key predictor of the Seahawks' success: the team is undefeated when her passer rating is 100 or higher, but only 1-4 otherwise. Miley Falby did her part for the team as well, scoring a TD off of 37 receiving yards.

Sunlake didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Ellie Perez, Reese Gerhart, and Sofia Bonilla picked up one apiece. Gerhart continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Perez got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.

The win (which was Sunlake's third in a row) raised their record to 12-4. The victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 41.3 points over those games. As for Wesley Chapel, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 4-6.

Coming up, Sunlake will face off against Springstead at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few points on average (the Seahawks 4.9, the Eagles 7.3) so any points scored will be well earned. Wesley Chapel does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
